Eye exam
Your eyes can reveal a great deal about your overall health, yet it is not uncommon for certain vision issues to go unnoticed because they cause no symptoms. A regular eye exam remains the best way to protect your vision and detect conditions early before they potentially worsen.
At an Opto‑Réseau clinic, your eye examination is conducted by an optometrist who takes the time to assess your lifestyle, family history, and specific vision needs. You’ll receive a comprehensive evaluation along with clear recommendations to help optimize your visual health.
The exam also helps detect conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy—often before the first symptoms appear. Depending on your situation, additional tests such as retinal imaging or optical coherence tomography (OCT) may be recommended for a more in-depth assessment.

Our care journey
Personalized assessment
Your optometrist takes the time to understand your reality: lifestyle, family history, visual habits, and specific needs. Preliminary tests such as visual acuity and intraocular pressure measurements help guide the exam with precision.
Comprehensive eye health exam
Using specialized instruments, your optometrist examines the internal structures of the eye (cornea, lens, retina, fundus) to detect any abnormalities. When needed, additional tests such as retinal imaging may be performed.
Recommendations and support
At the end of the exam, you receive clear explanations, a prescription if needed, and a personalized follow-up plan. If required, our team will then guide you in selecting glasses or contact lenses based on your prescription, style, and budget.
Who is this service for?
An eye exam every two years is generally sufficient for adults with good visual health. If you spend long hours in front of a screen, wear contact lenses, have diabetes, or have a family history of eye disease, annual follow-ups may be recommended. Eye exams are not covered by RAMQ for this age group, but most private insurance plans and employer benefits offer reimbursement.
With age, the risk of cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration increases. Many of these conditions do not cause symptoms until they have progressed. An annual eye exam is recommended and covered by RAMQ. Additional tests such as retinal imaging or OCT may be suggested for more in-depth monitoring (additional fees may apply).
Vision plays a direct role in learning and development. The Ordre des optométristes du Québec recommends a first exam around 6 months of age, then at 3 years old and before starting kindergarten. Eye exams are covered by RAMQ for those under 18. The government program Mieux voir pour réussir also provides reimbursement of up to $300 every two years for the purchase of glasses or contact lenses.
