An optometrist is the professional who performs eye exams, detects vision problems and eye diseases, and prescribes glasses or contact lenses. An optician designs and fits your eyewear based on that prescription. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who handles complex diagnoses, performs surgery, and provides medical treatment for eye conditions. All three professions work together throughout your eye care journey. 

For a healthy adult with no vision issues, an exam every two years is generally sufficient. Children should be seen annually during their school years, as should individuals aged 65 and older. If you have diabetes, a family history of glaucoma, or a known eye condition, your optometrist will recommend a more frequent follow-up, tailored to your profile and to how your condition evolves from one visit to the next.

Partially. RAMQ covers eye exams for children under 18, individuals aged 65 and over, social assistance recipients, and certain people with visual impairments. For adults aged 18 to 64, eye exams and most specialized services are paid out of pocket, but they are often reimbursable through private insurance. Check with your clinic for details.
