Dry Eye Treatments - Frigon Plourde Optométristes

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE TREATMENTS?

How can discomfort caused by dry eyes be reduced?

Before presenting the available product and treatment options, it’s important to know that adopting some good habits can help reduce the visual discomfort associated with dry eyes.

First: hydration! Drink water regularly and, whenever possible, control the humidity in your workspace or daily environment. We also recommend applying the 20-20-20 rule when spending long hours in front of screens. The 20-20-20 rule is a simple exercise: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break, stop looking at your screen, and look elsewhere, focusing on an object about 20 feet away.

BlinkingDrops and gels for relieving dry eyes

Among the various products available to relieve dry eyes, there are different types of drops (artificial tears), gels, and ointments.

Once we have evaluated your situation (diagnosis), we will guide you to the most suitable products to relieve your dry eyes and ensure that a follow-up plan or more advanced treatments are in place, if necessary.

IPL, Photobiomodulation, Radiofrequency, Blephex, and ZEST Treatment

In addition to the products that your optometrist can prescribe, our clinic’s team remains at the forefront of technology, offering IPL treatments, photobiomodulation, radiofrequency, Blephex, and ZEST treatment.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) for treating dry eyes involves applying light pulses to your eyelids to control the inflammatory process of dry eyes, particularly for cases of meibomian gland dystrophy. It also helps reduce telangiectasias related to acne and rosacea.

Photobiomodulation (Low Level Light Therapy) heats the meibomian glands to liquefy their content. This therapy helps stabilize the lipid layer of tears and destroys bacteria responsible for blepharitis.

Since 86% of patients with dry eye disease have meibomian gland dystrophy, this type of treatment is an effective solution for treating moderate to severe dry eye cases.

Radiofrequency treatment heats and melts the meibum, emptying the meibomian glands to restore the oily layer of tears (lubricating your eye) and prevent rapid evaporation.

Benefits of radiofrequency treatment:

  • Safe and painless
  • Immediate improvement in your symptoms
  • Aesthetic benefits (firmer skin, reduction of wrinkles, fine lines, and crow’s feet due to collagen stimulation)

Since this treatment is mechanically performed by your optometrist or their assistant, it is personalized to meet your specific needs. It can also be combined with IPL treatment for more comprehensive control of dry eyes.

Microblepharoexfoliation treatment, lasting 10 minutes, is a procedure using the BlephEx® instrument (which includes patented medical-grade microsponges) to deeply clean the eyelashes and eyelids. This simple and painless procedure helps treat eyelid inflammation caused by blepharitis and can be repeated as needed.

ZEST treatment is a specialized cleaning procedure that eliminates Demodex mites, debris, and bacteria from the eyelids and meibomian glands, improving gland function and tear quality.

Punctal plugs and prescription medications

When it comes to solutions for combating dry eye effects, there are also lacrimal plugs (punctal plugs) and medications prescribed by your optometrist.

Lacrimal plugs are tiny devices placed by your eye care professional in the tear ducts to block drainage. The plugs help retain tears longer and prevent them from draining too quickly from your eye.

Since the plugs slow down the drainage of your tears, they are usually a complementary solution to other types of treatments for dry eyes. Plugs are an option to maximize your visual comfort if your eye care professional determines that the quality of your tears is adequate.

Finally, in some cases, your eye care professional may prescribe medications to help reduce certain symptoms of dry eyes.
