Specialty lenses to meet your vision needs in any situation

Technology has changed our lives for the better in many ways (efficiency, entertainment, communication, and more), but devices like computers, tablets, and smartphones also have a significant impact on our behaviour. Using a computer for an extended period of time—as many 40-hour-a-week office workers do—can make you realize that your current lenses don’t meet your specific close-up vision needs. And even if you are wearing the right glasses, using digital devices can change your posture, leading to headaches and backaches.

Luckily technology has the power to solve the problems it creates! Now there are lenses specifically designed to reduce visual discomfort caused by working on screens within close range.

For single vision lens wearers

If you only have one problem with your vision, you probably wear standard single vision lenses, which have a single prescription for the entire lens. But for the most comfortable screen viewing, you can switch to lenses specifically made for digital devices. These lenses can help ease eye strain caused by screen time, with a close-range field of vision at the bottom of the lens so your eyes don’t have to work as hard to read on-screen text. It’s easy to go back and forth between the fields because the difference between the two lens powers is too minor to confuse your eyes yet strong enough to help your eyes relax.

For progressive lens wearers

Progressive lenses are designed to correct multiple vision problems at the same time, but may not be the best fit for your lifestyle. While they may improve your near-range vision, progressive lenses are not ideal for extended close-up use. Computer glasses, on the other hand, have two rather than three optical zones so they could work for you if you wear progressive lenses but would like another pair of glasses for reading, drawing, doing DIY jobs around the house, and other close-up activities. They might also be a good option if your job requires you to spend a lot of time in front of a computer screen, because the optical zone for near distances is larger than on progressive lenses. With computer glasses, from your desk chair you can clearly see your documents at reading distance, your screen, and your colleagues, without having to put on and take off your glasses all the time.

For added protection

Posture is important, but so is your eye health! Specialty lenses may solve posture problems caused by the use of digital devices, but screens still emit blue light that can lead to other issues. Read our article on blue light to learn more about it and how to protect yourself.
