Eye health in Quebec’s winter: why sunglasses are essential

18 November 2025

Quebec’s winter is a beautiful yet demanding season. While we take care of our skin and respiratory system against the cold, our eyes are often overlooked. Yet, they are exposed to particularly harsh conditions: icy winds, dry air, intense light, and UV rays amplified by snow.

Cold and winter winds, combined with the dry air from heating systems, can cause excessive tear evaporation. This leads to dry eyes, often accompanied by redness, itching and a burning sensation. Optometrists recommend using moisturizing eye drops to relieve these symptoms, as well as supplements like omega-3 and vitamin D3 to support natural tear production.

But the greatest danger comes from light. Snow reflects up to 80% of UV rays, significantly increasing eye exposure. Even on cloudy days, UV rays are present and can cause invisible but cumulative damage. Prolonged exposure without protection can lead to photokeratitis—a corneal burn also known as “snow blindness”—which causes pain, redness, tearing and light sensitivity.

Why Wear Sunglasses in Winter?

Contrary to popular belief, sunglasses are not just for summer. In winter, they play a crucial role in protecting eye health:

  • They block 100% of UVA and UVB rays, reducing the risk of eye damage.
  • They reduce glare caused by snow and low sun, improving driving safety and comfort during outdoor activities.
  • They help prevent eye conditions such as photokeratitis, cataracts, and macular degeneration.
  • They improve visual comfort, especially with polarized lenses that enhance contrast and reduce fatigue.

How to Choose Sunglasses for Winter?

At Opto-Réseau, we offer a selection of sunglasses designed to meet the specific needs of Quebec winters. To make an informed choice, here are some key features to consider:

  • Polarized lenses to reduce glare and improve clarity.
  • Wraparound frames to protect against wind and particles.
  • Photochromic lenses that adapt to ambient light.
  • 100% UV certification for optimal protection.

By incorporating these simple habits into your winter routine, you protect your eyes from seasonal aggressions while fully enjoying Quebec’s snowy landscapes.
