Dry eye syndrome

10 June 2014

We constantly produce invisible tears that clean and moisten our eyes and protect them against foreign bodies. A burning sensation, irritation, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light are all signs that you may be secreting less tears due to dry eye syndrome.

Dry eye syndrome, also called ocular dryness, is a common eye disorder. An estimated 5% to 30% of the population—more women than men—suffer from it.

The most common cause of dry eye syndrome is aging, but a number of other factors can be involved:

  • Menopause
  • Laser surgery (LASIK)
  • Smoking and secondary smoke
  • Environmental factors such as wind, sun, or dry air
  • Long periods spent in front of a computer screen

Fortunately, there are a number of ways to protect your eyes from dryness. Here are just a few:

  • Blink more often when working at your computer.
  • Wear glasses to protect your eyes from wind and sun.
  • Position your computer screen below eye level.
  • Follow your eye care professional’s recommendations on wearing and cleaning your contact lenses.

If preventive measures are not enough, we suggest you consult an Opto-Réseau optometrist at a clinic near you. He or she can prescribe the most appropriate treatment for you. Your eyes help you in countless ways every day. Return the favor by taking the right steps to keep them healthy!
