Reimbursement of glasses and contact lenses for children under 18

Programme de remboursement moins de 18 ans

The Quebec government has unveiled See Better to Succeed, a reimbursement program for glasses and contact lenses for children under 18 years of age. This way, parents can get a fixed amount of $250 per 2-year period for the purchase of these products.

This new measure aims to improve academic success by allowing children from all walks of life to have the right visual aids and thus to promote their learning. To receive the $250 reimbursement, parents will need to complete an online form on the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) website. The reimbursement is granted only for the purchase of eyeglasses or contact lenses prescribed for vision correction by an authorized optometrist or ophtalmologist. The $250 amount is fixed, it does not vary with the cost of your purchase. Only purchases made as of September 1, 2019 from a merchant in Quebec are eligible and you must submit your application within 12 months following the date of purchase. We invite you to visit the RAMQ website for all the details about this new program.

All children are eligible for the program if they meet the following conditions:

  • Be under the age of 18 on the date of purchase of eyeglasses or contact lenses;
  • Be insured by Quebec health insurance
  • Have received a prescription for corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses during an eye examination conducted by an authorized optometrist or ophthalmologist

Why is the eye exam so important for children?

This measure is created in addition to the École de la vue (French Only) program to detect vision difficulties in schools thoughout the province, because 80% of learning depends on vision. This program created by the Fondation des maladies de l’œil offers children aged 4 and 5 years old an eye examination in school, with only an estimated 20% of children having seen an optometrist before they start school. Many of Opto-Réseau’s optometrists proudly participate in this program which is available in about a thousand schools throughout Quebec.

We also remind you that the eye examinations are covered by Quebec’s health insurance for children under the age of 18. There’s no reason not to book an appointment for your child and give them the best chances to succeed!

Opto-Réseau’s eye care professionals are there to guide you about your child’s visual health, from detecting the first symptoms of a vision problem to choosing the right frames for his of her small face. Book an appointment now in a clinic near you.
