Because we follow the latest eyeglass and optometry trends closely, we were all eyes at the International Vision Expo East, held in New York City from April 15 to 17. We returned home brimming with new ideas and eager to share this exhilarating experience with you. The following is a brief overview of the trends to watch for in 2017, according to Vision Expo.

The mirrored lenses of the ′90s are making a much-heralded return. Regardless of your wardrobe choice, they’re guaranteed to add a touch of style and originality! To be at the forefront of the trend, opt for flat lenses and a double bridge.

As you’ve likely guessed, 2017 trends will reflect a nostalgic nod to the ′80s and ′90s. This step back in time will be defined by vibrant “electric” colours, such as magenta, Klein blue and canary yellow, and by angular designs that we’ll see in both clothing and eyeglass styles.

Different times, different colours: muted tones will also be popular, instilling serenity, restraint and refinement. Cooler colours like grey can be enhanced with both warmer hues and soft shades such as coral and apricot.

Tortoise shell frames are the little black dress of the eyeglass world: timeless! At Vision Expo, we saw them in all shapes and colours, notably sporting vibrant colours and trendy angular designs.

Beyond creating a style, designers place enormous focus on ergonomics. In fact, it’s becoming increasingly common to blend materials such as metal and plastic in the manufacturing process to ensure a winning combination of comfort and style. And speaking of blending, the high-end, luxury look has officially entered the sports world.

Also at Vision Expo, Ray-Ban demonstrated the resilience and fit of its new line of sport eyeglasses by inviting visitors to pound their fists into a punching bag. The glasses proved to be a knockout, staying in place perfectly!
