This summer, patterns and prints have taken the fashion world by storm. They’re everywhere you look! It’s time to be bold and experiment. To get you started, here are the print hits of the summer and a few tips for pulling them off.

Let out your inner sailor!

Sea, sand, and the stylings of Jean-Paul Gaultier and Sonia Rykiel are the inspirations of the season. Stripes will give you that seafarer flair. Navy blue is obviously the signature colour for this print, but brighter colours like red and royal blue have lately taken the lead, giving this look some added brio. See-through fabrics are everywhere as well, and offer a more romantic, feminine take on the navy theme. For an edgy look, take the leap and combine two types of stripes.

Tropical prints

Summery and fun, tropical prints are on the rise. Fauna, flora, and fruits are in. Choose simple pieces with classic cuts, since the print in itself creates the effect. For the same reason, keep accessories to a minimum—earth tone sandals are a great way to complete the look. Prefer to be understated? Try just a tropical print frame, shoe or purse—pineapples and palm trees are all the rage this summer.

Flowers go with any look. For modern style, select a graphic floral print like those of French fashion brand Céline. If you’re petite, choose smaller, more delicate flowers so you’re not overwhelmed by your outfit. This season’s must-have? The flower print midi skirt. Pair it with a white t-shirt and sandals for a casual look that’ll have you turning heads.

And no, you won’t look like you just popped out of a picnic basket! A popular print in the ′60s and ′70s, gingham is back and better than ever. The cowboy look is out and modern cuts are in—that girl next door has blossomed into a full-blown fashionista! Pull it all together with a ′50s-style skirt or culotte and a jacket you can wear to work. For something a little more laid-back, a blouse or structured summer dress is just the thing. Since this is a print that really pops, go for accessories in neutral colours to avoid clashing with your clothes. Who does gingham best? Michael Kors, DVF, and Oscar de la Renta.
