Technological Innovations in Eyewear

During our visit to the Vision Expo East international show in New York in March, we not only explored the biggest trends of 2019 and 2020, we also saw a few innovations that will have an impact on the eyecare industry in the coming months.

3D printing

3D printing is coming to consumer eyewear. The manufacturing method was tested by frame maker Morel, which printed frames from the Lightec collection in 3D. The process results in frames with a unique velvety texture. The technology also gives designers a lot of creative freedom.

New photochromic lens technology

After five years of R&D, well-known photochromic lens manufacturer Transitions will launch Transitions GEN 8 lenses this fall. Engineered with a revolutionary new technology that includes a new generation of ultra-agile photochromic dyes, Transitions Signature GEN 8 lenses activate and fade back to clear faster than ever. They also get darker than previous models, block 100% of UV rays, and filter the blue light emitted by various electronic devices.

Light-adapting contact lenses

This is an exciting year for contact lenses. Since April 1, our clinics have been carrying Acuvue Oasys® with Transitions™, which react and adapt to changing light conditions, just like photochromic eyeglass lenses. Not only do these contacts correct your vision, they also reduce glare and provide enhanced colour contrast. Acuvue Oasys® with Transitions™ lenses also offer blue light and UV protection. The lens was named one of TIME Magazine’s Best Inventions of 2018. Talk to your optometrist to find out if this product is right for you.
